Mayo / May

A lot has happened this month!

The house has changed quite a bit since the last time we updated you all. The most exciting thing: we’re living in the house! We had incredible luck with the weather in April – sunny, calm days and colorful autumn trees.

The last time we wrote from our shelter

Hoy con la estufita / Today with our little stove

We put floor boards in the loft (tongue and groove) and worked on finishing the upper level walls. As soon as those were done we started sleeping in the loft. A few days later we moved a (real!) bed and mattress (used and in perfect conditions, thanks to Norma/Mom) into the loft, along with a beautiful rug that belonged to Manu’s grandparents. And all of a sudden we had a luxurious bedroom!... Just in time – our tent had already begun to break due to 5 months under the summer sun.

The three large windows were installed (double glass/thermopane) to keep heat in the house. It looked so different with those large, smooth surfaces! We continued working on the rest of the walls, put in a number of windows (used/broken), and also installed water in the house. Along with the water connection came the decision to add a small bathroom on the other side of the wall from the kitchen (southeast) in order to minimize pipe and simplify in general. We adapted a 20 liter electric water heater (also used and gifted, thanks Norma/Mom!) to feed the kitchen bathroom and shower. We also put up a temporary structure for the shower. It’s incredible how we now value simple things like being able to shower at home, and wash dishes in a sink with warm water!

About a week ago we finished the last of the walls. As if we had planned the timing, it started to rain as soon as we finished and May has marked the change of the seasons – fall in Patagonia is rainy and windy! We made a front door and moved the kitchen from the ‘summer shelter’ to the house. Another stroke of luck brought us a spectacular stove that same day, with electric oven and gas burners (thanks again Mom/Normi!).

Besides getting organized in the house and resting a bit, we’ve started experimenting with the rough coat (clay, sand, earth and fiber). On a whim the other evening we made a little wood stove out of the rough coat mixture, a 20 liter can we found, some zinc tubing we were given, stones, a little motivation and help from a friend.

Salud!

So, we’re happy and warm in our little house. We still have work to do, but under other circumstances. We hope to finish the roof, put the rough coat on as many walls as possible, and work on the bathroom as soon as possible. Today we’re enjoying a rainy day with friends, eating fresh baked cookies and drinking homemade beer (our friends brought us).

Cheers!
