Amigos lectores,
Felíz 2015!! Tanto tiempo.

Dear Blog-readers,
Happy 2015!! It sure has been a while. We hope this post finds you all doing well! Check out our 2015 calendar - if  you like it there are instructions on how to save it so it can be printed.

All is well here in the Bariloche summer. Long days, good construction weather, and the garden begins to really show progress. But we left off in wintertime when the house had reached a comfortable stopping point.

Even with the house unfinished, we were very pleased with its cold-weather performance this winter, and also love heating it with our efficient wood stove (rocket mass heater). We took a few months off from house work and picked back up in the spring when temperatures were a bit more inviting. Even before that, in anticipation of our desire to get a vegetable garden in full swing this season, we filled the house with plant starts that we would later make room for in the ground.

Since the summer is generally too short here for standard varieties of some plants to grow outside, like tomatoes, squash, eggplants, peppers, etc., our first project this spring was to make progress on a sunroom/greenhouse on the north (sunny) side of the house. It connects to the mudroom/hallway to the bathroom and mini-laundry, which we had temporarily enclosed last fall, creating a kind of enclosed outer “shell” around 3 sides of the hexagon.

We made the sunroom out of used windshields fixed to a wooden structure, and we filled in the spaces with earthen plaster (rough coat). We’ve been collecting these windshields over a number of months from a business that installs new windshields. The old ones are taken to the landfill and so we get them for free. The sunroom roof is polycarbonate, which is more transparent than the fiberglass roofing that we used to roof the rest of the mud-room/hallway (and theoretically won’t turn yellow over time as fiberglass does). The windshield-walls are slanted outwards to make extra room for raised planter beds, and we put many of our plant starts in the beds even before we finished enclosing it completely.

We’re quite happy to have this protected multi-functional space which we inaugurated as a living/dining room for Manu’s birthday on a lovely warm evening, and we’ve been enjoying using it as an indoor carpentry/garden workspace as well (especially nice when it’s raining outside!).

In parallel, we’ve been working on expanding the garden and improving the soil. We can’t say anything has been abundant yet, but the bits of arugula, radishes, chard, peas, parsley and carrots we’ve eaten so far sure are tasty, and encouraging as we try to be patient, awaiting more growth and harvests. Cabbage, broccoli, potatoes, beans, turnips, kale, beets, col rabi, leeks, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, daikon, Chinese cabbage, pak choi… are all growing and we hope they’ll produce.

Currently, we’re making progress on enclosing a cold storage room, or above-ground cellar, on the shady side of the house, which we started last fall. It’s triangle-shaped, has a living roof, wooden structure, mud and tile floor, and we’re about to put up the earthen walls (using waddle and daub technique). We aim for its thermal mass and insulation to create a cold environment ideal for storing veggies, flour, jams, etc., and if necessary it can be further cooled by nighttime ventilation. We have a small hinged door to use for everyday access from inside the house (like a refrigerator), and the rest of the door can be removed for less-frequent access to the store room. Even though this is no new invention since all kinds of similar techniques were used before refrigeration (Wink calls this a “California cooler”), we’re eager to see how it works for us. We’ll let you know!

Projects abound, as we’ve become happily accustomed to being the norm around here. In what’s left of summer we’re hoping to finish the mud and details left on the outer “shell” of the house and continue making progress on the garden.

It’s been just over two years since we first started living here at El Farito and we continually celebrate all that this place and our journey give us each day, such as comfort, satisfaction, the simple lifestyle we’ve adopted and the beautiful setting that surrounds us.
