Invierno / Winter

Buenas! Tanto tiempo!

Hello! Long time no blogging!

We’re happy to share some more photos of the house with you. These last few months have kept busy as is becoming usual … During May and June we worked on the roof, the exterior ‘rough coat’, a small bathroom, and started on the floor! In July we changed activities completely and taught kids ski lessons with the Club Andino Bariloche. In spite of the chill of winter and the house still being under construction, we’re comfortable and content!

Putting grass on the roof.

We put a border on the roof made of bundles of caña colihue (local bamboo-like cane) to retain the grass. Almost the entire west side of the roof is grass-covered, but we still have to get more up on the rest of it.

Putting on the rough coat in the rain, what motivation!

We started by covering up as many drafty places as possible, which were mostly along the fiber-wood interface, and around windows, etc. Then we continued filling in the rest. We now have the majority of the exterior covered.

For the bathroom we added a small structure on to the southeast wall of the house, reducing the distance the water pipes have to run. The roof is plastic with bubble wrap for minimum insulation. The walls have a light structure we made out of recycled wooden doors, reused wood from our (fiber) forms. We used the French wall (or ‘quincha’) technique that consists of canes nailed to the structure horizontally or diagonally with a mud mixture that fills in the gaps (we used the same mixture as our rough coat: clay, sand, soil and pine needles). The floor is made of this same mixture and small log rounds.

We continued feeling incredibly lucky (as we have throughout this entire experience) when we were given a used hardwood floor (red eucalyptus tongue and groove –T&G- , thank you Negro and Silvia!). We were planning on putting in an earthen floor (aiming for it to end up similar to a cement slab), but we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity experiment with this fancy wood floor. After debating for a while we decided to combine both techniques. We would put in the structure for the wood floor, orient the floor boards parallel to the walls of the hexagon, and put the earthen floor in the center (hexagon shape) in order to be able to maintain one of the main properties of this material: thermal mass.

We started with half of the floor – three triangles. We placed glass bottles (that family and friends had been collecting for us all summer) under the joists, acting as mini posts, and also keep the moisture of the ground from wicking up into the entire floor. Between the bottles and structure goes one large plastic layer (vapor barrier). In the space created by the joists we put cloth and cardboard as insulation, and in the center where the earthen floor goes, only cardboard. On top of it all go the T&G boards. We’ll fill in the spaces where one triangle meets the other with the earthen floor mixture in order to simplify the cutting of the boards.

Así está quedando…

Here’s what it looks like so far…

Some ski pics. It looks (and feels) like spring! So far, it’s been a very dry winter.

Today we got back to working on the floor and we’re excited to continue making this dream come true!
