West sides. Fine plaster painted with linseed oil.
Amigos y familia,
Tanto tiempo!
Cómo están?

Friends and family,
It’s been quite a while! How are you?

Since the last time we updated in February, we’ve continued working on the house during another great summer. And as autumn arrived we started slowing down a bit, enjoying the harvest season (in this case, the fruits of our construction), and incorporating other activities into our life.

We finished the interior rough coat plasters and almost completed the exterior ones, prioritizing the most important walls, as usual. We re-plastered some exterior walls that had gotten wet and frozen last winter (due to not being correctly finished, which would prevent moisture from penetrating). We also added a fine plaster coat to a number of walls, for example above the roofs we added around the perimeter. Or, in the case of the northwest wall (the most exposed to rain) we added the fine coat and 2 layers of boiled linseed oil painted on top, to waterproof it.

Ambas funcionan bien.

On the interior we chose certain walls to fine-plaster (like the kitchen), but for many we’re happy with the rough coat for now. We also expanded our kitchen surfaces a bit with two earthen counters, one finished with our sunflower seed oil and beeswax mixture, and the other painted with sunflower seed oil directly on top of the fine plaster coat. Both work nicely.

We redid the earthen floor because the cardboard that we had put below it as insulation was slightly unstable, just enough for the earth on top of it to move and crack. We took it all out to remove the cardboard, and we put in an insulating earthen layer with straw, and another earthen layer with a larger sand proportion and some rocks as thermal mass. After it all dried we applied two fine plaster layers and painted 2 layers of sunflower seed oil on top of that to waterproof and harden it. We’re enjoying going around the house shoe-less!

While the floor was drying we worked on expanding the house a little bit by adding roofs on some of the hexagon’s sides. Above the door (northeast) and bathroom (southeast) we built lightweight structures for fiberglass roofs that connect a mud room/entry with the bathroom and a small space for the washing machine. We enclosed this space temporarily with a used roofing material (called “cardboard” roofing here), in order to have dry, protected place to leave our jackets and shoes. We’re planning on enclosing it with earthen walls in the spring or summer. We’re also planning on joining this space with a greenhouse on the north wall, which now has only a roof structure waiting for its polycarbonate roofing and mud walls. On the south side we added a low living roof that’s triangularly shaped, where we’ll have a cellar-like space for storing food, harvests and preserves in a naturally cool place (due to the shade) that we’ll optimize with thick mud walls.

On another front, we’ve been improving our wood burning stove. We modified the door/feed tube, and started building the thermal mass, earthen bench around and above the horizontal section of stovepipe (as a heat battery). It’s in the process of drying, then we’ll keep adding mud. Against the stovepipe we used a more “massive” mixture (1:4 clay-sand) with some small stones, above and around which goes the same mix we use for rough coat plaster (1 clay: 2 sand: 4 pine needles) because it is better for tensile strength and slightly insulating. This cold and wet autumn has made us super grateful for the efficiency of our stove and the house, both of which will only get better. We’re also very thankful that last year was a dry fall, allowing us to build comfortably!

Besides house projects, we’ve kept busy with other enjoyable fall activities like hunting and drying mushrooms (suillius luteus & suillius lakae), making jam from a variety of fruits that grow in the neighborhood and surroundings, cutting firewood, cooking, reading, hanging out with friends and at times getting back into the mountains, climbing and hiking! We celebrated our first anniversary camping at Laguna Negra (by way of Cerro Lopez, a beautiful hike!), and we’re continuing to get to know parts of the Peninsula that are ideal for walking and biking, our own backyard.

Hongos! Antes de secar.
 Mushrooms! Before drying.

So it is that we’re happy with the house, and the life that we’re building around it. Everyday we’re thankful for the numerous factors that have allowed us to be here, now..!
