Catching up!
It´s been quite a while, a lot has happened and we´d like to share it all
with you – too much for one entry, so we´ll go bit by bit. After taking a break
from house-building during July to teach skiing (as we told you last time), we
got back to building in August and at the end of the month travelled to the
States! We’re back home and working on the house again… but we’ll get to that
later.

In August we had just enough time to finish the second half of the wood floor! Using the same technique as the first half, we put in joists, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard insulation and red eucalyptus T&G boards (used). What a change! We also noticed how much the floor for insulates us from the ground – especially during the cold snaps we had before travelling. We filled the center with mud and built a structure of spaced-out floor boards to protect the mud while it dried. This is what you see in the photo, but it´s not the final layer; it will be all earthen, aiming for a cement-like texture and durability.
We built a
new wood stove, making improvements based on our experience with the previous
versions. We put it in a different location that allows us to enjoy the view
while sitting around it. The stove pipe runs a longer distance inside the house
in order to trap more of the heat it produces. We´re planning on building a mud
bench over the horizontal part of the flue, as is typical in “rocket mass
heaters” (which were part of our inspiration for this stove). Soon, more on the
stove´s design.
regreso.
We tidied
up the house and left it to our friend Marquitos for him to live, enjoy and
accompany Pacha and Maqui until we returned.
